How to Stop the Three Most Annoying Dog Behaviours

As any dog owner will tell you, their pet has some habit that just irks them to no end and most likely this same trait is common amongst many of their fellow dog owners animals. There are three traits people find totally horrid that most dogs seem to find great joy in performing. In this article, we will discuss the three worst behaviours for annoyance factor and how to stop them.

When you ask around regarding the most annoying dog behaviours known, this one is sure to come up. Dogs are known for this behaviour around the world and still they persist. What behaviour are we discussing? You guessed it. Dogs like to drink from the toilet and just do not seem to grasp the point that you find this behaviour disgusting. To be fair, they probably wonder how you can stand to drink bottled water and sodas as, to them, this would appear a stagnant pool. Dogs prefer fresh, cool, running water and, unfortunately for those who really wish their pet would find a different fountain; the modern toilet provides just that.

Thus dogs the world over seem drawn to this bottomless water dish and while, with the exception of cleansers and household poisons, this is fairly harmless to the dog, humans the world over are in an uproar. So how do we fix this problem? Well, the first step is an easy one. Break the pattern of the behaviour by closing the toilet lid or the bathroom door. This will remove the temptation and force the dog to look elsewhere for water. In conjunction with this step, be sure to provide your dog with lots of clean, fresh water at all times. The dog should always have a readily available water source unless a veterinarian tells you otherwise. By closing off access to the toilet and leaving alternate water supply, you are retraining your dog towards a more suitable water source.

But what of the second most irritating behaviour, jumping on guests. Luckily for the trainers of the world, this is almost as easy to correct as the first problem. Dogs are friendly and gregarious creatures. When they see a new playmate, they naturally want to start playing right away. Unfortunately, your well-dressed guest might not feel too inclined to play with the dog that has just been rolling in the mud puddle in the back yard. So how do you teach your dog to mind his manners and save your guests prom dress at the same time?

Well, just as with everything else, it all goes back to the training. Teach the dog while it’s a pup and it will remember its whole life. If you thought it was cute for a fuzzy little pup to try and jump up and greet you, guess who is responsible for the one hundred pound mud monster that just ruined your prom? Or you could have avoided this tragedy by starting small and ignoring a pup that jumps. After a while, the animal realizes that this action gets no attention and is not really worth his trouble. Instead reward the pup for not jumping with copious amounts of verbal praise and treats.

This teaches the dog that not jumping is the reward getter. Also try introducing your dog to new faces while the animal is on a leash or harness as this provides more control for the handler and a properly placed “no” will tell the pup that this behaviour is inappropriate. If your dog has gotten past the puppy stage before you try to correct this situation, things may be a bit tougher but take heart. With persistence and patience, you can still have a dog that minds its manners.

The third most annoying behaviour we will discuss is Face Licking, which is especially annoying if your pet also has the first behaviour. Licking is a way for dogs to show affection and also to be comforting to their masters. If your dog is licking you, it is probably for one of these two reasons or maybe just because your dog likes the way you taste. The problem most people encounter is when the correct the dog for this behaviour, the animal either sees it as a game or thinks it is not getting its message across and comes back stronger. So how do we correct this?

Again the key is consistency and starting with a younger dog will make this much easier. Remember to use your “no” commands and give the dog some other outlet for expressing affection. Perhaps let the dog lick the back of your hand or give the dog treats for not licking. If the dog persists in licking your face, a light but firm slap to the nose should calm the even the most amorous pooch. Or if the dog seems it will never give up, just smile and be happy that at least he doesn’t drink from the toilet anymore.

Stop Dogs Digging Holes

So your dog has a digging problem, well not really, it’s you that have the problem, because to them, there is no problem. There are several reasons why dogs dig holes. These include

  • Boredom
  • It just feels good
  • Because for their bred it is their natural instinct e.g. terriers
  • They are hot and need to cool down
  • They are trying to escape out of the yard
  • They are lonely or they are trying to get some attention
  • They have excess energy and need to burn it off
  • You have created something that smells nice to them by putting fertilizer in your garden or providing some freshly dug dirt for them

TIPS TO STOP DOGS DIGGING HOLES

Boredom – Your dog is digging to give themselves stimulation, both mentally and physically. To counter this, you need to provide them with something else to do. Take them for walks, play with them and if they are home by themselves, leave them with things to play with.

Digging feels good or is a natural instinct for their breed – As mentioned above, give them something else to do or spend some quality time with them.

There are also ways to discourage further digging. These include

  • Placing their own fresh dog poop in recent holes, because they don’t like digging through their own poop
  • Place chicken wire where they like to dig, as they don’t like the feel of it, if they try to dig though it
  • Bury a small balloon just under the soil where they like to dig, as the exploding balloon will give them a fright and associate digging with a bad experience
  • Sprinkle chilli powder or cayenne pepper where they like to dig, as this will also associate digging with a bad experience
  • Reprimand them if caught in the act

They are hot and need to cool down – If they are hot, dogs will dig holes to provide themselves with a cool place to lie. To counter this, ensure that your dog has a cool place to go during the heat of the day. Also, make sure that they have plenty of water.

They are trying to escape out of the yard – Dogs dig under fences and gates in order to get to the other side, because they are bored (see above) and there are interesting things happening on the other side of the fence. Another reason that your dog may be trying to escape is to mate. Spaying or neutering is a good way to address this problem.

They are lonely or they are trying to get some attention – Bring them inside and let him be part of the family or go outside and spend time with them.

They have excess energy and need to burn it off – Give them lots of exercise though walks and games, that provide lots of physical and mental stimulation.

You have created something that smells nice to them by putting fertilizer in your garden or providing some freshly dug dirt for them – The fertilizer and the freshly dug soil are attractive to them. You can discourage them by placing a sprinkler in the garden and turning it on whenever you catch them in the act. Other methods for discouraging digging have been mentioned above.

You can also try providing a designated area for them to dig. This can be a sandbox or an area of freshly dug earth, where you can half bury toys to encourage them to play and dig in that area.

Hopefully this article has provided you with some possible solutions to stop dogs digging holes.

10 Things In Your Home That Can Kill Your Dog

Dogs are very curious animals and as omnivores and natural scavengers, can get into and eat just about anything. However, there are many toxic substances found in your home that could potentially kill your dog. The following is a list of ten common household substances that you should make sure to keep out of your dog’s reach.

1) Antifreeze: Many people do not realize it, but common antifreeze kills many pets each year. It smells and tastes very sweet to your dog and is very appealing to him. Ethylene glycol is toxic however, and each winter, many animals are killed by it. Symptoms of toxicity include seizures, vomiting, stumbling and lethargy leading to kidney failure. Make sure to keep your antifreeze out of your dog’s reach. If you suspect that your dog has ingested antifreeze, take your dog to the veterinarian immediately.

2) Chocolate: Chocolate contains a substance called the obromine which is toxic to dogs. Baking chocolate and dark chocolate is especially dangerous. While it usually takes a somewhat large amount of chocolate to kill a dog, poisoning and death does occur with smaller amounts ingested. Signs of chocolate poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, increased urination, and increased activity. This can progress to seizures and unusual heart rhythms. Call your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate.

3) Bleach: As you might imagine, household bleach is toxic to dogs. Keep all products containing bleach out of your dog’s reach. Symptoms of bleach poisoning include drooling, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Do NOT induce vomiting if you suspect your dog has ingested bleach and contact your veterinarian immediately.

4) Tylenol: As little as two regular strength Tylenol tablets can kill a small dog. Dogs lack the proper liver enzymes to break down acetaminophen. Signs of toxicity include drooling, lethargy, and abdominal pain. If you suspect your dog has ingested Tylenol, call your veterinarian immediately.

5) Watch Batteries: If your dog ingests a watch battery, it can cause a potentially fatal ulceration in the stomach within 12 hours. All other alkaline batteries are toxic to dogs as well. Symptoms of toxicity include drooling, lack of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy. If you suspect your dog has ingested a watch battery, contact your vet immediately.

6) Moth Balls: Moth balls are very dangerous to dogs. They contain an insecticide that causes central nervous system excitement and seizures. When metabolized, ingestion of moth balls can lead to liver failure. Symptoms of poisoning by moth balls include vomiting and seizures. If your dog has consumed moth balls, do NOT induce vomiting. Seek veterinary care immediately.

7) Fabric Softeners and other detergents: All sorts of household detergents are toxic to dogs at one level or another, but fabric softeners fall into the highly toxic category. Signs of toxicity include vomiting, lethargy, burns to the mouth, drooling, muscle weakness, and even coma. Do NOT induce vomiting if your dog has ingested any detergent. Contact your veterinarian immediately.

8 ) Mouthwash: Mouthwash can contain boric acid which is highly toxic to dogs. Symptoms of poisoning by mouthwash include vomiting, drooling, seizures, and coma. You should take your dog to the veterinarian immediately if you suspect poisoning by mouthwash or other household item containing boric acid like contact lens solution or denture cleaner.

9) Peach Pits: With most fruits, the pits and the seeds are toxic to dogs. Signs of poisoning include drooling, vomiting, and lethargy. If you suspect your dog has eaten a peach pit or the pit or seeds of any fruit, take him to the veterinarian immediately.

10) Household Plants: Many common and popular household plants are highly toxic to dogs. A partial list of toxic plants includes poinsettias, lilies, ferns, devil’s ivy, aloe, and ivy. Symptoms of poisoning due to ingestion of toxic plants include vomiting and central nervous system excitement. Many of these plants are fatal if ingested. Please contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your dog has eaten a toxic houseplant.

With diligence on our part, we can help prevent our dogs from getting into substances that are toxic to them. Many veterinary school websites offer lists of things that are toxic to dogs and what you should do if your dog ingests such things. As always, if you think your dog may have eaten something dangerous, contact your veterinarian immediately or take your dog to the closest emergency clinic.

Dog Food Allergies: The Facts

There is a difference between food allergies and food intolerance. Food allergies cause skin irritations. food intolerances cause diarrhea or vomiting, but don’t cause the usual allergic signs of skin irritations and itching.

Time

There isn’t a set time for food allergies to develop. A dog could show signs of a food allergy quickly, within days. Or it might not show up until eating a dog food for years. When a dog becomes sensitized to a dog food, it is a complicated process that involves an antibody response occurring in his intestinal tract.

Percentage

Dog food allergies occur 70% of the time with a food a dog has eaten for awhile, normally around 2 years or longer. They don’t usually occur when the dog initially eats a certain food. Food allergies are the reason for 20% of the itching that dogs suffer.

Response

The allergic response normally includes skin irritations like rashes, hot spots, and scaly red spots. The dog will shake his head a lot and paw his ears and face. Allergies can also cause other symptoms such as hyper-activity, aggression, chronic ear infections, breathing problems, infections of the eyes or inflammation.

If a dog has the allergic symptoms all the time and not just seasonally that is a clue of a food allergy. Another clue is if antihistamine isn’t effective. One more telltale sign is if a young dog has skin or ear ailments that are chronic.

Common Offenders

Studies have found these foods to be the usual ones to cause food allergies.

- Corn
- Wheat
- Soy
- Chicken
- Beef
- Lamb
- Dairy products
- Fish
- Chicken eggs
- Yeast
- Food colouring
- Preservatives

These foods are commonly used in commercial dog food recipes. Exposure is the key to the incidence of allergic reaction.

Veterinarian

A veterinarian can take blood tests and use other procedures to track down the foods that trigger an allergic reaction in your dog. If the vet thinks your dog has a food allergy, he will recommend an elimination diet, which means removing foods from his diet and giving him a different food regiment. Then after 12 weeks, returning the original foods one by one to look for an allergic reaction.

The foods the vet suggests should be all your dog eats during this elimination time. Do not give him things like treats, raw hide chews or flavoured toys, meds or toothpaste. Do not let him near a litter box, outside off of a leash or near another pet food.

Offending Food

When the offending food or foods are identified the only way to avoid an allergic reaction in the long run is to stop feeding those foods to your dog.  For more immediate relief antihistamines, fatty acids, and steroids are used.

Allergy Prone

Certain breeds of dogs have an allergic response to foods more often than other breeds: boxers, terriers, bulldogs, Irish setters, schnauzers, cocker spaniels, retrievers, and dalmatians. Other kinds of dogs can develop food allergies, but the breeds mentioned are more likely to develop them.

Teach Your Dog Not To Bark

Unwanted barking is one of the most common behavior problems in dogs. It is normal for dogs to vocalize and bark from time to time but many times this behavior escalates much to the frustration of many dog owners. There are many causes of unwanted barking. First you must determine why your dog is barking before you can begin a program of retraining. You may need help from your animal behaviorist or veterinarian to do this.

One cause of unwanted barking is attention seeking barking. You may have inadvertently reinforced this behavior if as a pup your dog barked a lot and you gave him attention to try and stop the behavior. As an older dog, he may be exhibiting this behavior because he is left alone for long periods of time, does not have appropriate stimulation or exercise, or is an active dog that needs to have a job to be happy.

If you suspect this is the cause of your dog’s unwanted barking behavior, you can start to retrain him by making sure first and foremost that he is getting enough exercise. Make sure to take daily walks – this also allows him to explore the world around him which is good mental exercise as well. If you have a local dog park, take your dog there and let him socialize with other dogs and people. Take an obedience class – this is good for mental stimulation and will help you to better communicate with your dog. Provide many interesting toys to keep your dog busy while you are not around. Make sure to spend one on one time with your dog on a daily basis and make it fun so that your dog learns that he doesn’t need to bark to get your attention.

Another cause of excessive barking is as a response to something that your dog is afraid of. Many dogs bark during thunderstorms or around unfamiliar people. If your dog is barking as a response to thunderstorms or other loud noises, provide him with a safe place he can go in these situations such as a crate. Make his safe place fun by providing good treats such as a Kong filled with peanut butter to keep him occupied. Play a radio or the television at a low level to help mask the noise. If your dog is barking at unfamiliar people, help him get over this fear by enlisting the help of your friends and neighbors. Have them walk by and approach your dog. Have them ask him to sit, and when he does so without barking, have them give him a treat.

Pretty soon, your dog will learn to associate unfamiliar people with treats and will learn new positive behaviors. If your dog barks at people and noises that are coming from outside the house, you may want to limit his access to rooms with windows. This will help cut down on the unwanted barking behavior.

If your dog is barking when you’re not home, it could be due to separation anxiety. If your dog is especially attached to you or has recently experienced a situation of change in his routine such as divorce, a move, or a death in the family, this could be the case. To remedy this kind of barking behavior, you will need to start a course of desensitization. You can begin to do this by taking very small trips such as just out to the mailbox and back, while leaving fun toys and yummy treats for your dog. As your dog learns to behave while you’re gone, slowly increase the length of time you are gone.

To check and see if your dog is barking when you’re gone, you may need to use a tape recorder or enlist the help of your neighbors. Separation anxiety often needs to be treated with medication as well as desensitization. If you suspect your dog is barking due to separation anxiety, please consult your veterinarian or animal behaviorist.

Some people choose to treat their dog’s unwanted barking problems with bark collars. The most humane bark collar available today is the citronella collar. These bark collars work by spraying harmless citronella in your dog’s face whenever he barks. Studies show a very high rate of success with the use of these kinds of collars. Using a citronella collar for a period of time can help to reinforce more positive behaviors.

There are many training tips and tools available to help you replace unwanted barking with more positive behaviors. If you need more information, consult your veterinary staff/pet professional or click on the graphic.

Teaching Your Dog To Heel

The HEEL command should be one of the first commands that you teach your dog. This command is important, as it will help to ensure the safety of your dog while out in public. The command itself is quite simple and almost any dog should pick up the meaning of this command with 30 minutes or so.

So what should your dog do in response to this command? This one word command tells your dog that the animal is to walk directly at your side, not before or after you.  The command keeps your dog at your side, rather than going wherever they please and doing what they want. As a bonus, having a dog constantly at your side in obedience to you, can offer you protection from undesirable characters when out walking.

If this sounds like something that you would like, then you need to know how to teach your dog to do it. Fortunately, it isn’t as difficult as you might think. There are two general methods of training your dog to do this. One uses only positive reinforcement and the other uses a mixture of both positive and negative reinforcement.

THE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT METHOD

  1. Place your dog on a short leash and have some of your dog’s favorite dog treats with you.
  2. Decide which side you prefer your dog to walk on and train with your dog on this side.
  3. With the dog by your side, and both of you facing in the same direction, place a treat in your hand next to your hip.
  4. In a firm, yet gentle voice, say “heel” and walk forward.
  5. When your dog responds by walking with you, praise them and reward them with the treat. It is important to be consistent and not to reward before the action is carried out, yet always reward for a good performance.

As long as you are prepared to be patience, this method will work well for most dogs and as a bonus will result in a strengthening of the bond between you and your dog. Unfortunately, some dogs are just naturally harder to train. So if you are the owner of  one of these independent and strong willed dogs, then you need to look at the training method that combines Positive and Negative Reinforcement.

THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT METHOD

  1. In this method, you need to start with a slightly longer leash of approximately seven to ten feet.
  2. Allow your dog a few moments to explore the boundaries of the leash and understand that they cannot just go wherever they like.
  3. Call your dog to your side and position yourself as before, with them next to you and you both facing the same direction.
  4. In a firm voice, say “heel” and walk forward. It is likely that your dog will not walk with you. They will, instead, begin to explore and most likely head in a different direction to you.
  5. In order to correct this behavior, turn in the opposite direction to which your dog is headed and take a few steps forward, at a brisk pace, while raising the leash to shoulder height and letting it play out behind you. The result of this will be your dog quickly reaching the end of the leash and them experiencing a sudden halt to their forward momentum. They quickly learn that to disobey the heel command, results in discomfort, caused by the sudden stop at the end of the leash. After a short while, they will learn to obey the command.
  6. When your dog shows obedience, be sure to reward them with lots of positive reinforcements, such as treats, along with verbal praise.

Whichever of these methods you choose in the training of your dog, the HEEL command is sure to go a long way in making you a much happier pet owner, who will be proud to show their pet anywhere.

If you consistently train with love, patience and consistency your dog will reward you with loyalty and many years of companionship.
